Jharkhand: In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old Spanish woman identified as Maria Fernandez was gang-raped by 8-10 local men in Jharkhand’s Dumka District. This incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, March 2, 2024. With several injuries, Maria was rushed to Phulo Jhano Medical College Hospital in Dumka by her husband Manuel.
The Spanish couple, who was on a trip around the world, arrived in Dumka from Bangladesh via a two-wheeler on Friday. They were enroute to Nepal through Bihar and had planned an overnight stay near the Hansdiha Market.
In an official complaint, the woman stated that around midnight, while she was sleeping inside the tent, 7 to 8 local youths from nearby areas entered the tent, looted the place and ended up raping her. The local youth also physically assaulted the couple after raping her.
After the sexual assault, Maria was admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College Hospital in Dumka by her husband Manuel for medical examination and treatment. After the test results, doctors confirmed sexual assault injuries on her body.
Dumka SP Pitamber Singh Kherwar reached the spot on Friday night itself and set up an investigation. Police have detained 3 suspects based on leads and are searching for the remaining accused who are currently on the run.
Police have already started an investigation and forensic teams have collected samples from the crime scene. Police are also scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the accused.
This incident has caused massive public outrage in Jharkhand. Politicians are slamming the horrific crime. Several journalists have raised concerns over the safety of tourists and law and order in the state. Many are demanding strict and instant action against the accused.

Jharkhand BJP president Babulal Marandi reacted to this incident by saying, “If these kinds of incidents will happen with foreign tourists, then who will come to Jharkhand?”
