New criminal laws notified - Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita & Bharatiya Saksha Adhiniyam to replace IPC, CrPC & Evidence Act from July 1.

Controversial sedition law removed under new laws. But armed rebellion and separatist activities can still be prosecuted as treason.

Expanded definition of terrorism includes threats to national security by explosives, poisonous gas or mass violence. 

New laws allow trials to proceed without accused present. Applies if accused doesn't appear within 90 days

Punishments enhanced for rape and sexual assault of minors. Aligns with POCSO Act to prevent lenient sentences. 

Minimum punishment increased to 20 years or life for gangrape of women. Up from 10 years previously.

New laws explicitly criminalize sexual crimes against minor boys. Closes gap in previous laws.

Sedition law scrapped. Expanded terrorism & absentia trial provisions. Harsher punishments for sexual crimes.
